World Food Day is celebrated each year on 16 October to promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and malnutrition. On the occasion of World Food Day 2018, FAO and the European Commission will organize an event hosted by the MEP Mr. Paolo De Castro that will take place in Brussels on 16th October 2018 at the European Parliament.

This event will consist of a two-hour debate preceded by a networking lunch. It will provide feedback and build on the findings of the recent 2nd FOOD 2030 High Level Event that took place in Plovdiv under the auspices of the Bulgarian Presidency on 14-15 June 2018. It will also focus on the next actions needed to prevent hunger by 2030 and to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.

A conference on People’s Food – People’s Health. Towards healthy and sustainable European Food Systems, will be held under the Austrian EU Presidency in Vienna on 22-23 November 2018. The presentation of multi-sectorial best practices in the food system will be a main focus of the conference, together with a discussion on potential future initiatives towards healthy and sustainable European Food Systems. A call has been issued to submit examples of best practices by August 31.

The Netherlands, like many other countries, face a number of challenging issues such as obesity, malnutrition, diabetes, climate change and scarcity of resources for food production. While the Netherlands carry out high-level food & nutrition research, this is nevertheless also fragmented. A more coherent and integrated research policy is needed to deal effectively with challenges in the areas of food, health, and sustainability. That is why the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) and the Dutch Top Institute Food and Nutrition (TiFN) initiated The Delta Plan Nutrition Research.

The JPI HDHL welcomes HorizonEU the proposal for the next European R&I Framework Programme 2021-2027, officially presented by the EU Commission on June 7th 2018. The overall policy for the new framework programme will be an "evolution and not revolution" of Horizon2020 and the programme will be implemented through three main pillars:

1. Open Science,
2. Global Challenges & Industrial Competitiveness and
3. Open Innovation.

In particular, pillar 2 includes five clusters of which Health and Food & Natural resources are specifically focusing on the strategic domains of the JPI HDHL.

At the FOOD2030 conference in Plovdiv, Bulgaria on 14-15th June, a first presentation was made of the findings of the FOOD2030 Independent Expert Group. In their report ‘Recipe for change: An agenda for a climate-smart and sustainable food system for a healthy Europe’ the Expert Group defines focus areas and gives concrete recommendations to all the stakeholders in the food system. This includes a mission in the next framework programme on healthy diets to drastically reduce the incidence of non-communicable diseases.

FoodNexus, a European network of multinational companies, SMEs and knowledge institutes in the area of food, is organizing the first FoodNexus Visioning Summit in Paris on 29-30 May. The aim is to provide clear recommendations on how to shape the future of food, starting from the question:
“What are the most urgent problems facing the food industry in the next 10 years, and how can we best meet these challenges?”
The JPI HDHL is participating in the summit through its new chair (from July 2018) Carlos Martinez Riera, who will give a presentation for the workshop on Food for health and wellbeing. The speakers also include the coordinator of the JPI HDHL ENPADASI network and a member of the Stakeholder Advisory Board.

The European IPR Helpdesk organises trainings and activities in the field of Intellectual Property (IP) management and maximising impact in Horizon 2020 projects.
They have developed a brochure that aims to clarify the terminology by illustrating the differences between communication, dissemination and exploitation, and to point out the areas they have in common. In addition, the IPR Helpdesk organises webinars on effective IP & outreach strategies to increase the impact of Horizon 2020 projects (next webinar July 4th 2018).


On 13th June, a workshop on future proofing food systems will take place from 13.45 – 17.30hr at The Agricultural University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. This joint workshop is organised by the SCAR Food Systems Strategic Working Group and JPIs HDHL, OCEANS and FACCE. The workshop is a Plovdiv FOOD2030 High Level Conference side event and aims to build on the results of the SCAR FS SWG and collaboration between the three JPI’s.

The objective of the workshop is to set the direction and decide what the next steps are for future-proofing food systems by increasing the impact of R&I programming and funding.

The call statistics of the co-funded call “Interrelation of the Intestinal Microbiome, Diet and Health” in the frame of the ERA-Net Cofund “HDHL-INTIMIC” has been analysed. This call was launched in January 2017, with the aim to support research projects that address important research questions regarding the cause-and-effect relationships between diet, the intestinal microbiome and human health.

Evaluation and indicators
To evaluate the results of the co-funded call, an analysis on the call statistics has been performed using indicators like:

  • number of submitted proposals in the two different evaluation stages (including the number of involved partners, countries and funding agencies)
  • requested and awarded funding
  • gender distribution
  • collaboration with private partners etc.

The results of this analysis will feed into the evaluation of the impact of the co-funded call.

Number of proposals and budget
In total 80 pre-proposals have been submitted during the first stage, of which 66 pre-proposals were formally eligible. After the evaluation, 28 consortia were invited to submit a full proposal of which 11 proposals have been selected for funding. In the 11 awarded projects, a total of 43 research groups from 8 countries and 6 collaborators are involved. The total requested budget of the 11 projects is 9.6 M euro of which 2.2 M euro will be contributed by the EU as top-up funding.

Addressed topics
Six of the awarded projects focus on the role of diet-gut microbiome interactions in cardiometabolic diseases, in particular Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseases, Type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome and their risk factors. The other projects focus on a variety of topics like cognitive function, colorectal cancer, maternal immunity and neonatal colonization as well as basic mechanisms of host-microbe interactions.
