HDHL (through ZonMw) is a partner in the new EU-funded project CLEVERFOOD. The aim is to transform the European food system towards a more regenerative, resilient and plant-based food system. - Afbeelding
All projects funded within the HDHL-INTIMIC cofunded call are finished. The call on “Interrelation of the INtesTInal MICrobiome, Diet and Health” was launched in 2017 as part of HDHL-INTIMIC. It was co-funded by the EC, aiming to fund transnational research projects that address the causal relationship of diet, the intestinal microbiome and health. - Afbeelding
NAFLD affects 25-30% globally, yet lacks specific treatment. Research now targets the liver–gut axis and bile acids. Soluble fibers, like oat β-glucans, may improve liver health by binding bile acids and altering the gut microbiota to improve metabolic parameters. - Afbeelding
Obesity and high (saturated) fat intake drive non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) via the gut microbiota. However, the exact interaction between dietary fats and the microbiome in causing this disease remains unknown. - Afbeelding

Maternal obesity affects 30% of pregnancies, impacting offspring brain and gut microbiota development. This is linked to lower cognitive abilities and behavioral disorders. With cognitive decline rising globally, early-life strategies are vital to prevent future impairment. - Afbeelding
HDHL-INTIMIC was the second ERA-NET Cofund of JPI HDHL and launched its first call in 2017: Interrelation of the Intestinal Microbiome, Diet and Health. The call was funded by the EC and 8 countries. Supporting 11 research projects, the initiative concluded in December 2022, yielding significant new insights into how nutrition impacts health. - Afbeelding
Gut microbiota affects health and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Diet shapes these microbes, and gut-derived metabolites may be altered in T2D based on intake. While fiber metabolism is well-studied, protein's role remains unclear. It is unknown how dietary protein affects glucose and lipid metabolism in T2D. - Afbeelding
WHO ranks colorectal cancer as the 2nd leading cancer killer. Red and processed meats increase risk, and while the gut microbiome is vital for health and digestion, its exact role in the development of this specific cancer remains unclear and requires more study.
