APPETITE project results: Plant protein and fibre solutions for healthy ageing

Last changed:

After four years of collaborative research across Europe, the APPETITE project has recently come to an end. To mark the completion of the project, partners presented and discussed the main results during an online final conference on 13 November 2025.

APPETITE is a European research project under Healthy Diet, Healthy Life (HDHL). Funded by five national authorities, the project was carried out between 2021 and 2025. A multidisciplinary consortium from six European countries brought together expertise in food development, biochemical research, and clinical studies to investigate whether innovative plant protein–fibre products, combined with physical activity, can help improve appetite and prevent undernutrition in independently living older adults.

The results of the APPETITE project were summarised and presented online by the project partners during the final conference, held on 13 November 2025.

Key outcomes

In short, APPETITE developed versatile plant protein–fibre products that were shown to be both bioavailable and well accepted by older adults. When combined with personalised dietary advice, these products can be used to increase protein and fibre intake without negatively affecting appetite or overall energy intake.

Future research should focus on better reaching older adults with reduced appetite, in order to further optimise strategies for preventing undernutrition in this vulnerable group.
