Obesity and high (saturated) fat intake drive non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) via the gut microbiota. However, the exact interaction between dietary fats and the microbiome in causing this disease remains unknown. - In January 2017, the first joint funding action of the ERA-Net Cofund “Interrelation of the INtesTInal MICrobiome, Diet and Health” (HDHL-INTIMIC) was launched by nine countries. Projects started in the beginning of 2018 and run for three years.
- Biomarkers for Nutrition and Health In April 2014 the Joint Programming Initiative ‘A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life’ (JPI HDHL) launched a transnational call for research proposals on Biomarkers in Nutrition and Health (BioNH). The funded projects MiRDiet and FOODBALL stared in December 2014 and ended respectively in December 2017 and July 2018.

Gut dysbiosis is linked to colorectal cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Though treatable via lifestyle changes, diagnosis is hindered by the complex, individual nature of the microbiota. This multifactorial complexity makes identification a major challenge. - Impact of Diet, Food Components and Food Processing on Body Weight Regulation and Overweight Related Metabolic Diseases In February 2019, the JPI HDHL launched METADIS, a 3rd call organised under the umbrella of ERA-Net HDHL-INTIMIC to promote collaborative international research on nutrition and health.
